3 Secret Causes of Acne That May be Hiding in Your Home

Acne isn’t just found during the awkward teenage years. According to one study published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, it was found that about 54 percent of adults over the age of 25 suffer from some form of acne. Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States and it’s not caused only by hormones and puberty. If you are an adult dealing with acne, make sure these three common culprits haven’t invaded your home!

Your cell phone. When you use your cell phone, the oils in your skin stick to the screen of the phone. If you never clean your cell phone, you are essentially pressing your cheek up to a pile of bacteria and oil when you make a call—a breeding ground for breakouts. Wipe your phone down daily with alcohol or a gentle cleansing wipe to prevent pimples on your cheeks and chin.

Your yoga mat. Like your cell phone, your yoga mat collects facial oils when you place your cheek on it. These oils stick around and can cause acne later. Wipe down your yoga mat after each use or use a towel beneath your head if you’re using a public mat at yoga class.

Your pillowcase. Laying on your pillowcase introduces dirt, bacteria, and oil from your hair onto its fabric, which can then be transferred to your face when you switch positions in your sleep. At Minch Professional Cleaning Services, LLC, we recommend washing your pillowcase at least once a week.

Keeping your home clean isn’t just great for when company comes over—it can also improve your health and lower your stress levels. How to Clean a Hairbrush

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t spend a ton of time thinking about your hairbrush. However, hair brushes can quickly accumulate dirt, oil, and pollen that gets caught in your hair, and you may end up re-introducing these nasty particles to your ‘do if you never clean your brush. Use these easy steps to clean your hairbrush. In fact, if you didn’t know, a properly cleaned brush will have an extended life, lasting upwards of three years!

Gather your supplies. To clean your brush the right way, you’ll need a few supplies. You’ll need a comb (preferably one with a pointed handle), a bowl large enough to fit the brush, a bottle of gentle shampoo, and a toothbrush.

Remove the hair. Using the comb, remove the hair from the brush. You’ll want to use a comb and not your fingers, so you don’t bend the brush’s bristles. Lift the hair up and out and throw it into the trash.

Shampoo the brush. Holding the handle of the brush, swirl the brush around in the bowl of water. Don’t soak the brush, as this can damage the brush’s wood or cushion if it has either. Remove the brush from the water and put a few drops of shampoo on the toothbrush. Use the toothbrush to scrub the bristles and body of your brush. Swirl the brush in water again and lay it out to dry overnight.

Remember to do daily maintenance. Removing your hair from your brush daily will prevent dirt from building up, leaving you with better hair and a cleaner brush.
