Spring cleaning is certainly one of our favorite events of the year, but we also understand that for homeowners it can seem laborious. However, after over ten years of house cleaning in Princeton, we’ve picked up a few tips that can turn spring cleaning from a slog into a snap. Read on and prepare to be surprised by how easy spring cleaning can be.
1. Non-Toxic Oven Cleaner
When you have to choose between a smoky self-cleaning oven or harsh oven-cleaning chemicals, cleaning the oven is never pleasant—until now. There’s an all-natural solution that no one’s told you about. Simply mix equal amounts of vinegar and baking soda, then scrub your oven clean.
2. Quick Fix for Tangled Vacuum Rollers
When your vacuum suddenly stops sucking up dirt and makes a low whirring sound, you probably get exasperated because you know it’s time to flip it upside down and painstakingly tease out hair, string or other materials that have gotten stuck in the rollers. But there’s a quick solution to this problem: grab a seam ripper from your sewing basket and run it under the offending strands to quickly split them, then pull them out.
3. Appliance Cleaner in Your Pantry
You may already use cream of tartar in your kitchen to make baked goods rise properly. But did you know that cream of tartar can also clean your stainless steel mixer when you’re finished baking? Simply mix a tablespoon of cream of tartar with a few drops of water, then rub it on any stainless steel appliance that needs brightening up or de-greasing. Scrub it with a sponge and wipe clean with a damp paper towel. Your steel appliances will return to their original shine.
4. Polish No More
Before you polish your wooden furniture: don’t. Commercial furniture polishes may leave a waxy residue that ends up attracting more dust. Instead, use a microfiber cloth to wipe dust from wooden surfaces. The cloth will pick up more dust than a damp rag and keeps the surface dry to prevent the attraction of more dust. To repel dust, you can also run a dryer sheet over your wooden surfaces.
5. Try This Before Recycling
Before you toss that stack of week-old newspapers into the recycling bin, recruit them for food and garbage odor removal. This hack works as long as the newspapers haven’t been exposed to moisture. Simply set a stack of newspaper on one of your refrigerator shelves or at the bottom of your garbage bin. The absorbent newsprint will soak up odors.
6. Essential Oils for a Fresher Bathroom
Essential oils don’t have to smell overpowering like patchouli. There are several fresh-smelling oils available that have disinfectant properties. One is tea tree oil, which you can easily find at a drugstore or health food store.
For a clean, germ-free toilet bowl, add two teaspoons of oil to two cups of water in a spray bottle, then spray your toilet bowl and let it sit before scrubbing. You can also dab a few drops into the toilet paper tube; it will release a fresh scent every time the toilet paper is used.
